Here I am Lord

We sang this song at Paul Buttar's birthday celebration - which as he requested was simply a praise and worship evening, it was amazing. Voices lifted in praise to the Lord, I had to leave early but for an hour and a half we just sang songs to God. It was awesome! Karl Berg led it...truly wonderful! That is the kind of birthday celebration I would love to have! More of You Lord less of me!

Anyway, we sang this song and I couldn't get through it without crying...not a little tear either which was embarrassing but verging on sobs. This morning as I watched this, it was even more emotional for me. This is how I have been feeling about the Bible study, the seniors, cookie day, just longing for more and more ways to reach out to our community...so many are lost and need Him.

Here I am Lord.....

Bible Study Tuesdays

Here is the link to the commentary.

Unfortunately I did not have time this week to do questions or add thoughts of my own. Just one note from Matthew Henry on vs. 22-23....

The eye, that is, the heart (so some) if that be single—haplous—free and bountiful (so the word is frequently rendered, as Rom. 12:8; 2 Co. 8:2, 9:11, 13; Jam. 1:5, and we read of a bountiful eye, Prov. 22:9). If the heart be liberally affected and stand inclined to goodness and charity, it will direct the man to Christian actions, the whole conversation will be full of light, full of evidences and instances of true Christianity, that pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father (Jam. 1:27), full of light, of good works, which are our light shining before men; but if the heart be evil, covetous, and hard, and envious, griping and grudging (such a temper of mind is often expressed by an evil eye, ch. 20:15; Mk. 7:22; Prov. 23:6, 7), the body will be full of darkness, the whole conversation will be heathenish and unchristian.

Hope you had a great Tuesday!
Blessings,
Liisa

Money Matters Monday

This is one for me.......
Stop shopping!

In the study yesterday we discussed serving mammon - money and said that so many people shop and shop and rack up mountains fo debt they can't pay for because they are serving their "god". We must remember that we don't have to be rich to serve mammon (money) the poor can be just as greedy and covetous as the rich are.

True so true! So one rule we can follow to save money is to just stop shopping for things that we don't need.

One of the rules I am trying to apply to my life is to not buy anything that I do not need, that is not going to benefit me and my family or that I do not have a place for already.

Sometimes I buy things that I just like at the moment, or clothes that I do not really need, or things I don't have a place for. Do you know what happens to ALOT of it? It ends up in a giant pile of things to give away! Was it worth the money? Nope.

So I am trying harder to avoid that money wasting pitfall of just shopping for the sake of shopping.

Hope you had a happy Monday!
Blessings,
Liisa

Sermon Sundays

Sorry I am so far behind - busy busy busy busy!

How is a Person Justified? Romans 5:1-11

- Job asks this question - How is a person justified?
- Justification/Justified means to be declared righteous or just as though I never sinned. As a court announcing a favorable verdict - positive outcome.
- Apart from justification we are hopeless with nothing to say when we atand before a thrice Holy God.
- Romans 3 - all the world may be guilty before God.
- We are justified if we are saved.
- Romans 3:24 - justified by grace - the principal involved here.
- Every human being feels they must do something to merit justification. We feel we can't measure up unless we do something special.
- Not of works but gift of grace.
- We want to deserve it - not by works but by mercy
- Justified freely by His grace
- Freely - no cost to recipient
- Same word Jesus uses when He says freely you have received, freely give - without merit without cost.
- Jesus did not merit being hated but they hated Him anyway.
- Justification is freely given it costs us nothing, but cost God His Son.
- romans 3:25 - Justified by His blood. Without blood no redemption of sins. Redeemed.
- Justification and redemption tied together on purpose in the Bible.
- Propitiation - God demanded a specific sacrifice was satisfied.
- Basis of God's righteousness is reason we can be justified.
- Without shedding of blood there is no remission of sins.
- We are justified by faith. The person who exercises faith in Jesus Christ. Rom. 3:26
- Something we must do - not of works - believe
- Not just acknowledging it but living in accordance with that belief
- No boasting. Justified by faith apart from work of the laws.
- What do we have to do to be justified - exercise faith
- James 2:24 - Justified by works.
- Basis is we are justified by faith in Jesus
- How do we show it to others. The fruit.
- Romans = Root James = Fruit
- How do you know trees are MacIntosh apple trees. Someone told us - we believed them. How do we know for sure? Fruit.
- How do we know we are justified? By the way we live our lives.
- Joshua 2:9 Rahab the Harlot. The Lord your God....She says you guys worship the 1 true God. I know it and I am willing to acknowledge it.
- Her actions gave evidence of her faith.
- She put her faith into action. James 2:25
- Justified Romans 5:1 Justified by faith (past tense) peace with God.
- Peace with God - God has nothing against us anymore, declared righteous. God is whollly satisfied with Jesus sacrifice. It has already been dealt with. However weak our walk may be God is looking at Jesus' blood not our sins.
- Peace with God - result of justification
- Romans 5:2 - Access to God - result of justification.
- Hope in God - result of justification.
- When a sinner stands before the bar of God He has 3 choices - condemn sinner, compromise His own holiness (not going to happen) or change the sinner into a righteous person - that is what He has done.
- No tricks - imputes to them the righteousness of Jesus. Changes them.
- God made Jesus who knew no sin to be sin for us that we may be made righteous.

Hope your Sunday was wonderful!

Liisa

Bible Study Tuesdays

This week we studied Matthew chapter 5. Here is the link to the commentary.

Some extra thoughts...

Matthew Henry says about Poor in Spirit...
To be poor in spirit means to be emptied of worldly wealth, if god orders that to be our lot. It is to sit loose to all worldly wealth and not set our hearts upon it, but cheerfully to bear losses and disappointments which may befall us in the most prosperous state.

2) It is to be humble and lowly in our own eyes. To value others above ourselves. It is to acknowledge God is great and we are not. He is holy and we are sinful, that He is all and we are nothing. To humble ourselves before Him.

3) It is to come off from all confidence in our own righteousness and strength, that we may depend only upon the merit of Christ for our justification and the spirit and grace of Christ for our sanctification.

My note - Our society teaches us to be the polar opposite of meek. To willingly submit to authority is thought of as weakness. to disregard your own rights and priviledges is viewed as the ultimate no no. Look out for number one is the theme of our day.

My note - vs. 11 We should note the word falsely in this passage. You will not be blessed if people are saying bad stuff about you and it is true.

Vs. 17-18...
Matthew Henry says -
He fulfilled the law by...
1) Obeying the commands of the law for he was made under the law for He was made under the law (Gal. 4:4) He obeyed perfectly and never broke the law in anything.

2) To make good the promises of the law and the predictions of the prophets which did all bear witness to him.

3) To answer the types of the law

4) To fill up the defects of it and so to complete and perfect it.

5) To carry on the same design.

Vs.38-42 An eye for an eye.
It always amuses me when people who are not Christian end up quoting scripture. It's amazing how over the years some scripture has become and everyday part of our vocabulary.

Questions

1) Do you esteem others as better than yourself?
2) do you find it hard to humble yourself?
3) Do you have any ideas how we can be better at this?
4) Why do you think it is so hard to do this?
5) Do you feel bad when you sin or do you push away that "little voice" that tells you it's wrong?
6) Have you ever honestly mourned your sin?
7)Have you ever felt the separation from God thatcomes from unrepented sin? What does it feel like?
8) It is very hard to be meek, to disregard our own rights and priveleges. Have you ever met someone who does this with seeming ease?
9) What effect would doing that and being truly meek have on your life?
10) Do you hunger and thirst after righteousness? Do you long for it? If not why?
11) Have you experienced persecution?
12) What are some ways to deal with it?
13) Do you know anyone who you believe no matter what? Someone you believe always means what they say? What makes you believe them? How can we be like that?
14) Do you think it's possible to live the way Jesus tells us to in the Sermon on the Mount?

Have a Happy Tuesday!
Blessings,
Liisa

Money Matters Monday

A day late but here none the less....

There is an old saying a penny saved is a penny earned. It is true. Why not pay yourself instead of the stores?

My son makes fun of me for stopping at three or four different stores when we go shopping but I save quite alot of money by shopping the sales at different stores (Only if I am in town already otherwise I'd be spending more on gas than I saved on sales!) A little extra time spent shopping pays me in the money I save.

You can also pay yourself by making foods and snacks from scratch. It really doesn't take so much effort and it saves ALOT of money.

Spending some time researching money saving ideas is another way to pay your self. There are many great websites full of ideas out there just try searching frugal on Google.

If you look at money saving as a job that pays it puts a whole new spin on the effort.

Remember if you look after the pennies the dollars look after themselves.

Happy Monday!
Blessings,
Liisa

Sermon Sundays

Today's sermon was titled The Hour of Maximum Peril and was taken from Psalm 85:1-13.

- Are the glory days of large church attendance and many salvations behind us?
- Pslam 85:6 - Revive us again
- A church in Bible history (sorry I did not catch the reference) brought in idolatry, immorality and God judged them.
- When we choose to go our own way God judges us.
- Revival is what happens on the inside that causes changes on the outside.
- You can put on a false front but if your heart isn't right it is just a sham.
- False revival - no doctrinal basis, no heart only emotional, too much emphasis on show and feelings .
- No one knows the day or the hour when Jesus is coming back. Are you prepared? It could be today. How are you living?
- Amos 4:12 Prepare to meet thy God.
- Nehemiah - fasting and praying confessed sin. He wanted to see Israel rebuilt to glory.
- John said in Revelation Laodicea needed nothing but it was wretched and poor.
- Look over the past year. We examined the gifts of the Spirit and how to use them yet there is a lack of help - who will step up to fill the gap?
- How are we exercising our gifts?
- We looked at sinning against the Spirit, sin in your life, sin in the church (body).
- (Pastor) sees the urgency of the hour and can't help but wonder how much time we have left.
- What do we do?
- Psalm 138:7 - Revive me.
- Need for personal revival. Are we content to let things proceed the way they are?
- If we want to see God move we need to seek personal revival. Lord revive me - do something in my heart.
- If your Spiritual gas tank is registering zero for empty 10 for full where would you set the gauge?
- There is room for improvement - room for revival
- Psalm 51
- Need for personal revival
- A Christian writer listed personal sins of commission and omission- worldly mindedness, envy, pride, slander, trifling with God, hypocrisy, robbing God, temper, hindering others of being used by God.
The list may not include what you know in your heart is withholding the revival of God. What is holding back revival this morning?
- Would you do like David did? Psalm 139.
- Do you want to see God move? Be sure, absolutely sure in your your sould that there is nothing between you and God.
- You say you want revival go straight to God and sincerely ask. ?You don't need anything special or anyone else.
- 2 Chr. 29
- Backslidden nation. Hezekiah opened the doors.
- The priests removed all garbage and cleansed the house of the Lord.
- National revival is doubtful because even churches don't care about it.
- God is not deceived and not to be mocked.
- You can't hide what is really on the inside no matter how good your outside shows.
- Need revival when iniquity abounds, when people rebel, when the presence of God is not revered.
- It is so subtle and so easy to backslide.
- How does God seal our hearts? How does He revive us?
- Psalm 80:7 - when we pray
- If my people will humble themselves, turn from sin and seek my face.
- Prayer begins revival. In Acts they are always praying about something.
- There is lip service to the notion that prayer produces results.
- When was the last time you were at prayer meeting?
- How will this revival happen?
- Participate corporately. In Acts we see they gathered corporately for prayer.
- Deal with sin.
- Individual accountability to God.
- We cannot expect blessing on our lives if we have sin in our lives. Let not iniquity have dominion.
- Psalm 138:7 Revive me.
- It is possible. Do not lose heart.
- Say Lord you have said You will revive me please do it, help me to take the necessary steps.
- Hab. Oh Lord revive Your work.
- Send a Revival.
- Send me Lord an great revival in my heart.

Happy Sunday!
Blessings,
Liisa

2 cups sugar
1 cup margarine
2 eggs
5 cups flour
2 tsp. baking powder
2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. vanilla

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Cream butter, sugar and eggs together.

Add milk and vanilla and beat well.
Refrigerate 1 hour.
Roll heaping tbsp. into balls and place 6 to a sheet to allow spreading.

6 cups icing sugar, 6 tbsp. butter, 3 tbsp. of milk, 1 tsp. vanilla
Beat all ingredients well until smooth and creamy.

Enjoy!

Whatever Wednesdays

Sorry this is so late coming - we've been having computer problems.

Today's post is about the temple.

How would you react if someone walked into the church and started flinging wads of fat every where? Perhaps they head down the aisle spraying oil on everything? Would you be upset? I sure would be!

What if someone started telling raunchy stories in the sanctuary? Swearing and telling dirty jokes? It would be appalling wouldn't it?

What if the pastor brought in a tv and started showing pornography? Graphic filth? Horror? He'd likely be strung up wouldn't he?

What if instead of hymns and choruses the worship leader broke into a song about sex? Murder? Cheating on your spouse? Terrible!

The Bible tells us that our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (New King James Version)
Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.

So let us then be careful what we allow into the temple through our eyes, through our ears and through our mouths.

We must watch what we eat, what we listen to and the things we see.

God has really been speaking to me lately about how the things I see and hear become a part of me that I can't get rid of. Once you see something you can't un-see it. The same goes for the things you hear. They are in there to be called up again and again even if you don't want them to. They even come back in your dreams. If those things aren't good then well...ICK!

He has also been dealing with me about the things I put into my mouth and the amount of it. ~sigh~ It is such a struggle but one I must win. I am polluting His temple. I am filling it with nastiness. How awful is that?

So let us all take good care of the temple. The Holy Spirit lives there and we want Him to stay!

Blessings,
Liisa

Bible Study Tuesdays

Today we studied Matthew chapter 4. You can find the commentary I used here since again there was just too much good stuff to cut it down. I have the feeling every week will be like that so I will just post the link each week to come with my comments and the questions.

My comments....

Vs. 1&2 - It often happens that after we are obedient in following through with baptism and make that public declaration of faith that we will be sorely tempted and tested afterward. Jesus understands - how wonderful to have a God who fully understands temptation.

While it is certain that we will all face temptation it is important to remember what the Bible says in Corinthians 10:13 - There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man; but god is faithful who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able, but will with temptation also make a way of escape, that ye may be able to bear it.

Vs. 3&4 - If we do not know what God's Word says we will not be able to use it to battle Satan we also leave ourselves vulnerable to being deceived. We will have no way of knowing what we read or are being told is true.

Vs. 5-7 - The devil quotes Psalm 91:11,12 and uses it out of context. Matthew Henry's Commentary on Psalm 91 says that a great truth is laid down in general, that all those who live a life of communion with God are constantly safe under His protection....vs. 11,12 the charge given to the angels concerning the saints.

Questions -

1) What is the longest you've gone without food? Can you imagine how Jesus felt after 40 days and 40 nights?

2) What are some ways we can prepare ourselves for when the temptor comes?

- Pray for help to resist at the time of temptation but also before it ever happens. We know we are weak and in what areas.

- Avoid putting ourselves in situations where we know we will be tempted.

- Avoid spending time with friends who are not living a Christian life. The Bible warns about not being unequally yoked. What fellowship hath light with darkness. Bad association spoils useful habits. Be careful you are not being led astray. You may say how can I help him get saved if I avoid hanging out with them. Have a good honest look at who is influencing who, before you think you are helping them. A strong Christian stand is a better witness than a backsliding Christian.

- Put on the armour of God each morning.

3) If Jesus physically came and called you to come, leave everything and follow Him would you?
Do you heed His call to come spiritually leave all the bad stuff behind and follow Him?

Happy Tuesday!
Blessings,
Liisa

Money Matters Monday

Today's idea is to cook once eat twice (or more *wink*) Whenever you make a casserole, meatloaf, roast, chicken...well really anything you make double the recipe. Roast two chicken instead of one, cook two cassroles, make a double batch of stew etc. Eat one a freeze the other. It uses the same amount of electricity or gas to make double so you save money there but the bigger savings come when you have a meal already to go all you need to do is defrost it.

How often do you not feel like cooking? You've had a long day at work, you feel yucky etc. The end result is either a fast food stop or buying prepared food at the store. This costs so many times more than a home cooked meal that it is like tossing money out the window not to mention it is not a healthy choice usually. So by having the option of a meal ready to be microwaved at home you will save oodles!

Another bonus to doing this is that if there is a time when someone you know needs a meal - they are sick, just had a baby, they lost a loved one etc. etc. you are able to help them out in a pinch by defrosting the meal you already prepared! So easy to be a blessing to someone with a need. ~smile~

Happy Monday!
Blessings,
Liisa

Sermon Sundays

This week our pastor decided to make the whole service about communion rather than preach a sermon and then have communion. We sang songs throughout the service and read relevant scriptures about Jesus' life and death and what that means for us. It was a wonderful time of just focusing on the blessing of communion and what Jesus has done for us. Awesome!

However that means there is no sermon for this week. ~smile~

Have a great day!

Liisa

Recipe Thursdays

This soup is so yummy! Whenever I make it I make garlic herb bread sticks to go with it. It would also be good with biscuits, rolls or a hearty bread with butter.

You can top the soup with sour cream, grated cheddar, chopped green onions etc. YUM!

TGIFriday's Black Bean Soup

2 tbsp. veg. oil
3/4 cup diced onions
3/4 cup diced celery
1/2 cup diced carrots
1/4 cup diced green pepper
2 tbsp. minced garlic
3 19 oz. cans black beans
4 cups chicken stock
2 tbsp. vinegar
2 tsp. chili powder
1/2 tsp. cayenne (for less spicy soup - omit)
1/2 tsp. cumin
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. hickory liquid smoke

Heat oil in a large pot over medium/ low heat.
Add veggies and garlic and simmer slowly for 15 minutes until onions are clear. Do not brown.
While cooking pour beans in a strainer and rinse.
Measure 3 cups of beans and put in a food processor with 1 cup of chicken stock.
Puree on high until smooth.
When veggies are ready, pour pureed beans, whole beans, the rest of the chicken stock and every other ingredient in the pot.
Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 50-60 minutes or until the soup has thickened and all the ingredients are tender.

Serves 6.

Enjoy!
Happy Thursday!

Whatever Wednesdays

I was thinking today about reaching out to others with the gospel and how to do that and I remembered watching Kirk Cameron witnessing to people. He is so good at it...I am afraid I wouldn't have the nerve to do what he does but it does work! Here are a couple of clips...

This one he is speaking to gang members!

Oh one note from our Bible study...when we were talking about how we can try and help our friends and family be ready for death or Jesus' coming I forgot to mention the most important thing we can do and that is to pray for them. God can do anything, reach even the hardest hearts. If we pray for leading as well then He can show us how to reach others for Him.

Happy Wednesday!

Bible Study Tuesdays

There was so much great stuff in the commentary that I just couldn't whittle it down much so here is the link to the whole thing.

My comment..
vs. 13-14 - Just as Jesus came of His own free will to be baptized so must each one of us. we cannot force anyone to take this important step. Their heart must be right and they must do it for the right reasons.

Questions -

1) Do you think if John the Baptist were to have come today he would have started in the wilderness? Do you think he would have dressed the way he did?

2) Would you listen if he did come that way?

3) Do you think he would have preached such a bold message?

People today often squash the Spirit of God by being too afraid of offending people or too afraid of being unpopular or looked down on. This doesn't mean we should thump people on the head with our Bibles and tell them they are stupid but we should never be ashamed of the gospel or afraid to reach out to others as God leads us to.

4) No need to answer out loud to this one - it is between you and God and no one else. People who came to John recognized their sinfulness, their need to get ready and were willing to do something about it. Do you have any hidden sin holding you back? do you need to get ready? Are you willing to do something about it?

5) Jesus is still coming with judgement. Are you ready? Are your friends and family ready? What are some ways we can help others get ready?

- Pray for them daily. Light a candle each morning or place a special object where you will see it each day. Every time that catches your eye take a moment to pray for you unsaved family and friends. It could also be a bracelet, ring etc. anything that will catch your eye. (This idea of the candle as a reminder to pray comes from Courtney at www.womenlivingwell-courtney.blogspot.com Take time to read her blog if you can it is amazing!)

- Invite them to church, bible study, Christian concerts, dinners and events.

- Give them books tracts etc.

- Talk to them about what God has done for you.

- Talk to them about great sermons you heard or wonderful things you read in your morning Bible reading. Let your love for God show as you share!

- Shine! The unsaved are watching us to see if our lives match what we say. Let the love of god shine through you to others. That is the very vest witness there is.

There are many more ideas I am sure but these are just a few I thought of as I was writing this.

Happy Tuesday!
Blessings,
Liisa
