Priorities

Well ladies due to the big McFly I got at the study the other day....the one about serving your husband, your family and your home then IF time allows serve others...I have to stop this blog.

I just do not have the time necessary to keep it going. I have been neglecting my priorities in favour of serving others and I can't do that anymore...it isn't just the blog...I have had to look seriously at other areas as well.

On a happy note though the study is working in my life already and I am loving it - so is my hubby!

So the Bible study itself and our book study are still on - they are such a blessing to me - only the blog is stopping. Hope you understand!

Have a happy day!

Liisa

Tuesday's Study

This week we were on chapter 10 in Matthew. Sorry this is late... it has been a crazy week!
Here is the link to the commentary.

My note- I often think about a story I heard once about an armed gunman who had students lined up and he asked them if anyone believed in God. One girl stepped forward and he shot and killed her. I so admire her refusal to deny her faith in God even in the face of death. Even in dying this girls faith is a witness to all who saw the news reports, all who were there and all who hear this story retold.

Questions

1) Have you ever seen first hand the principle of whom God calls he equips?
2) Do you think it would be hard to remain harmless as doves in the face of persecution?
3) Have you experienced persecution from family members? How can we handle that?
4) Do you think you would admit your faith to an armed gunman knowing he'd shoot you if you answered? All you'd have to do is be quiet to stay alive - could you answer?
5) Has the fear of persecution ever stopped you from talking about faith and God?
6) If being a Christian causes division in your family how can you deal with that?
7) After reading all this and learning what being a disciple may entail are you still whole heartedly willing to be a disciple of Jesus?
8) What's in it for you?

Have a happy day!
Blessings,
Liisa

It's Still the Cross

I heard this song this morning and it really encouraged me to know that there is relief for the sick and it's still the cross. I LOVE Christian radio! ~smile~ Just when I am having a bit of a tough morning with pain God sends me a message of encouragement through the music on the radio. There is no better way to start your day than with singing praises to God. He is awesome and he is so worthy of our praise.

Happy Thursday!

Liisa

Sermon Notes

This week Pastor Robins continued the series on Jonah - with a sermon entitled Who Prays to God Anyway?

- Men don't pray a prepared prayer in time of crisis.
- When he landed in the belly of the fish god had prepared he knew there was absolutely no more running away from God. It was then that he prayed. The prayer is recorded AFTER this event - it was prayed DURING this event.

Who Prays to God Anyway?
1. Those in Trouble. Jonah's Plight. Jonah 2:2 Psalm 18:6
2. Those who know God hears. Jonah knew God would hear. Jonah 2:2 Psalm 30:2
3. Those who experience God's chastening. Jonah knew it was God who had done this. Jonah 2:3 Psalm 42:7
4. Those who hope in God. Jonah declared his hope 3 times vs.2,4,6. Jonah 2:4 Isa. 43:2
5. Those who know they have no solution for their adversity. Jonah 2:5-6 Psalm 69:1-2
6. Those who turn to God when nothing else could help. Jonah knew God could help. Jonah 2:7 Psalm 120:1

- Salvation is God;s work for us.
- Salvation is never man's work for God.

- Chapter 2 Jonah finally prayed. Up until now even when everyone else did he did not . God finally got his attention in the fish.
- 1:17 - 2:1 - Int he fish he finally realized he was going to die and figured he better pray to God. Jonah was in trouble - he cried out to God.
- When things are fine and going well you may not feel the need to pray, but when you are in trouble, with no out - you'll pray.
- Jonah knew his plight was the consequence of disobeying God. No one's fault but his. He provoked God.
- Are you running away from God? Are you a believer who is heading down a path that brings you farther from God not closer?
- Who prays to God? Those in trouble. If you cry out to God He will hear your voice. If you are a Christian trying to avoid God - if you call out to Him, He will hear you.
- If you haven't begun a personal relationship maybe you never thought God would hear you. He will hear you.
- Up until the fish Jonah thought he was in control then he realized God was pursuing him - He could not run from God. It was because of lack of obedience he was chastened. He knew it was God and not just coincidence.
- up to a point people think they can run from God. They feel they can do what they like and disobey and they act like they think God doesn't care. We create all kinds of problems for ourselves when we do that.
- If you have tried to run from God you will realize you are experiencing troubles because God is chastening you. How long are you going to do that?
- If you take one step toward the Saviour you will find His arms opened wide. when you decide what you need to do he isn't going to jerk the offer off the table. He doesn't want any to perish. He is full of mercy and grace and slow to anger.
- Like the prodigal son we will be welcomed home.
- Jonah was without hope without God. Imagine what it was like in the belly of the fish - weeds, water and whatever else it ate would be in there.
- There is no other solution - God is the only solution.
- You can't help yourself when God is on your trail.
- As long as we think we can help ourselves we'll stumble along in our misery. When we call out to God with a humble heart He hears.
- God never turns away those who come in real repentance.
- When we remember God, He remembers us.
- Have you fallen on your face before God and repented.
- If you follow after any other god you forsake your own mercy. Some have no hope.
- As long as you choose to reject the voice of God or think I don't need to do this -there is no mercy.
- When we turn to God in our distress - thanksgiving fills our lives. Lev. 7:12 Sam. 2:24
- Fulfill your vow before God.
- Salvation is of the Lord - most important phrase in the book of Jonah.
- Gen. 1:3,6,9 Every time God said something it happened. God spoke to the fish and it spit Jonah out on dry land.

Happy Sunday!
Blessings,
Liisa

Money Saving Ideas - Taking Care of Fabric Items

The old saying "A stitch in time says nine" is very true. This is a money saving idea too.

When you notice a small tear or a loose button or a hem coming undone etc. take the time to repair it. This goes for sheets, towels, blankets, quilts etc. If you do this your belongings last so much longer. It only takes a few seconds to fix a little tear but it can take much longer to fix if you leave it to get worse. You will save money by not needing to replace your items as often. When you are folding your laundry and or ironing take a few seconds to check for issues that need attention and handle it right then.

If you have towels whose edges are frayed you can extend their life by folding in the sides a bit and folding again to tuck in the edge and sewing down the side creating a smooth new edge.

If the towels are worn thin in the middle you can cut them down to make new smaller towels or face cloths. You can even make wash mitts out of them. Just double fold the edges as for creating a new edge.

You can do this with sheets that are worn in the middle but fine everywhere else too and make them into extra pillow cases.

Look for ways to stretch the things you have to their longest life. If you do not have to buy new things as often you will save money.

During World War 2 they had a saying "Use it up, Wear it out, Make it do." It worked then it works now. Our grandmothers knew how to make the most of our resources - we need to get back to that kind of lifestyle.

One other way you can save money is proper care of your fabric items. When you get a spill on something take a minute to treat the stain, again it only takes moments yet saves lots of money in buying new things all the time. One idea that works great on those impossible oily stains is to use dish soap on it as a pretreater. Ironing extends the life of fabrics that require it and make things look so neat and fresh. Follow the recommended washing instructions to get the most life out of your items.

Buy quality whenever you can. Things may cost more but they will last longer and you will save more money in the long run by not having to re-buy the same item over and over. This is a hard one for me since I always look for the best deal, but I failed to realize that cheapest price is not necessarily the best deal. What I do now is shop for quality on sale! Clearance racks are my best friend! ~smile~

Happy Wednesday!

Bible Study Notes

Today we studied Matthew 9, here is a link to the commentary.

My note - The bible warns us that bad association spoils useful habits. We do need to love others and reach out to help them but we need to becareful that they do not influence us while we are with them. We need to becareful not to pick up bad habits form them. A great thing is when we spend time with godly people they rub off on us too.

Happy Tuesday!

Liisa

Sermon Notes

This week Pastor Robins continued his series on the book of Jonah.

Jonah in the ship - Protesting
Jonah in the fish - Praying
Jonah in the city - Preaching
Jonah in the suburbs - Pouting

- Important for us to understand God speaks.
- He had a message for Nineveh - He had a messenger - Jonah.
- Everyone listened to God but Jonah.
- Nineveh was one of largest cities in the world at the time.
- Disobedience never brings us closer to God.
- Jonah fled from God. Jonah went from the presence of God vs. 1:3
- Are you going farther or closer to God?
- Joppa is mentioned in the New Testement Acts 9:36, 10:5. Jonah went form Gathefer to Joppa on his way to Tarshish.
- He went down - went down always used when people are going away from God.
- Man always pays the fare when he runs away from God. It costs you, your relationship with Him, not just money, family, relationships.
- Why did Jonah run? Maybe he hated Ninevites? Maybe he was just disobedient? Vs. 4:2 He understood the character of God. He knew God would stop from doing harm if people repented.
- Is that a good reason? Should we not spread the gospel to people we deem unworthy - they don't deserve it.
- Who does not deserve to be saved? Is there anyone that bad? No! Whosoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
- 1:4 Nature listens to God - Nature at His command.
- Mark 4:39-41 - Jesus arose and rebuked the wind and it ceased - great calm.
- One moment big storm, the next great calm - only one could do that. God controls nature.
- The wicked listened to God. vs. 5 The sailors were very afraid and became very religious.
- Religion will not help you. You need a personal relationship.
- There are no atheists in foxholes.
- The sailors call out to their own gods.
- 1:5 Jonah was asleep the phrase went down is used again here.
- Just because you go away from God doesn't mean God gives up on you.
- 1:6 Captain wakes Jonah to pray. It is a shame that the prophet had to be called to pray by a heathen man.
- Tragic to turn to prayer after all else fails - should pray first.
- Initially when we run away from God there seems to be a sense of relief, can relax now, false sense that all is well.
- 1:7 Cast lots - lot fell on Jonah.
- They ask 6 questions - Who caused trouble? Occupation? Where are you from? What is your country? What people are you from? Why have you done this?
- If you are running away from God - what in the world would cause you to do this?
- God had cranked up the storm. Tried everything humanly possible.
- When God tightens the screws in your life - you can try everything but talking to God and it won't work.
- Conditions worsen - Futile human efforts - time to pray.
- Vs. 14 They cried out to the Lord
- The creatures listened to GOd.
- Picked up by a great fish. Critics say no fish in mediteranean big enough to swallow a person. Bible says - the Lord had prepared a great fish could have been a whale - could have been a sardine.

Have a happy day!
Blessings,
Liisa

Money Saving Idea

This is one Leanne just reminded me of.....
If you make a big batch of pancakes (from scratch - much cheaper) then you can freeze them and have quick and easy breakfast ready whenever you need it. Leanne uses the toaster to reheat hers - a great idea! I had just been microwaving mine which works too.

If you would like a really good recipe for pancakes I can post one as soon as my recipes are unpacked from the boxes all my things are in while we have a bit of renovations done.

Happy Wednesday!

Liisa

Tuesday Bible Study

Here is a link to the commentary.

Questions

1) Have you ever felt like a leper? In what circumstance.
2) What are some dibilitating effects of sin?
3) Do you give testimony to others of the things Jesus has done for you?
4) Do you seek help from Jesus for others? Do you pray for them?
5) Do you have true faith in Jesus' ability to heal today? (Often I think we question wether he will want to more than if he can.)
6) Have you ever been so worried about hurting someone's feelings or upsetting them that you've done something or allowed somethingh you shouldn't have?
7) Do we have the attitude of the potential disciple - I will follow You whereever You go?
8) Are we truly willing to follow where God leads us regardless of where it is or do what he asks us to do?
9)When we get caught in life's storms do we cry out to Jesus for help?
10) Do you believe demons are still present and active today?
11) How can we protect ourselves from their influences?
- Put on the armour of God daily.
- Spend time in prayer, Bible reading, and devotional time daily.
- Don't open doors to them through things we watch, read and listen to or things we may have in our homes we shouldn't.

Happy Tuesday!
Blessings,
Liisa

Fill Your Home

Fill your home with praises to the Lord! There is little better than starting your day singing songs to God. When you fill your home with Christian music you will find your whole attitude changes. The whole atmosphere of your home changes. There is peacefulness and calm. Try it you will like it!

This is an awesome station with modern Christian music, it also has great devotionals and wonderful lessons. AWESOME! LOVE IT! Here is the link to it online. It is 90.7 fm if you want to tune in on your radio or in your car.

Also I don't know if you know it or not but if you have Eastlink for your cable then you have a Christian station right on your tv. It is channel 802 I think. It is called The Light and it is awesome too. Also modern Christian music. I say this mostly for Leanne who will assume I am recommending all hymn all the time stations. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I have been so blessed by these stations, I have learned alot, been encouraged and found added peace and happiness in my home. ~smile~ Thank you Lord!

Happy Tuesday!

Liisa

Serving the Lord

My friend Kathy was telling me the other day about something that she had read about serving God. She said alot of people feel that they always have to be out doing things at the church or special things in the community but she pointed out that everything we do we are to do unto the Lord. Everything we say and do is service to God. Taking care of our homes and families is service to God. He instructs to do so!

There is nothing at all wrong with serving at church or in the community those are wonderful things it is just that we don't need to feel badly if we can't or run ourselves ragged trying to do too much outside the home.

Just a side note about priorities. Our priorities are God first and foremost, then our husbands , then children, then our home, THEN outside activities. When we follow this formula our lives are so much better and peaceful. I find when I get the priorities out of order then nothing seems to go right, I am running all over, nothing is working out and I am unhappy and frustrated. Some ladies use God being first to justify letting their homes, husbands and children suffer while they are all over doing ministry work. If they look at the priority list then they will see that God comes first not ministry work that is last. God is first with prayers, thanksgiving, worship, Bible reading, devotional time etc. Big difference!

Happy Monday!
Blessings,
Liisa

Sermon Notes

Our pastor has just begun a series of sermons on the book of Jonah. He has entitled the series It's the Preacher's Fault.
The first sermon is titled Who was Jonah Anyway?

What miracles can be found in the book of Jonah?

- The storm
- Selection of Jonah as the guilty party
- The subsiding of the sea
- The great fish appearing at the right time
- Preservation of Jonah
- Ejection of Jonah from fish safe on the shore
- The gourd
- The worm
- Repentance of the city of Nineveh

- Jonah tells the story of the fish, gourd, east wind, storm and the boat. Are these the important elements of this story? No they are incidentals.

- There are six significant subjects dealt with in the book of Jonah: Truths taught by Jonah.

1. The Resurrection of Jesus Christ
2. Salvation is not by works vs. 2:9 Salvation is of the Lord.
3. God's purpose of grace cannot be frustrated.
4. God will not cast us aside for faithlessness. It is so easy to wander.
5. God is Good and Gracious
6. God is the God of the Gentiles (not only Jews) Nineveh city of the Gentiles - Jonah was a Jew.

- One of the most interesting discoveries about the book of Jonah is that everyone obeyed God except the preacher.
- The oldest and busiest boats in all the world are ships that sail away from duty.
- People don't pray prepared prayers in a time of crisis.

- When some people get in trouble they blame the preacher.
- Gos wanted Jonah to do something - he didn't want to. That got alot of people in alot of trouble - it was the preacher's fault.
- No book is more criticized in the Bible than Jonah. Attack on the Word of God.
- They look for what they see as a weak spot.
- They haven't been able to poke a hole in the fish story.
- They make it out to something it doesn't say.
- Some critics say Jonah had a dream on the ship he was on and this is the dream - false.
- Some say the ship was wrecked and the one he got on next had a big fish on the front of it.
- Some say Jonah took refuge in a dead fish from the storm.
- All false!
- They say it is a fable - just a story.
- The real root is they deny the miraculous. Unbelief.
- If we did that then there wouldn't be very much of the Bible left.
- Jonah is real, the story is real.
- 2 Kings 14:24-25 Is a verifying scripture.
- Jesus referred to Jonah.
- Luke 11:29,30 Jesus verifies the story of Jonah. Matthew 12:39-41.
- The moment you question the record of Jonah you question Jesus the Son of God.
- It is accurate and it is reliable.
- Cut the Bible anywhere and it bleeds the blood of Jesus. It is all through the Bible. Without shedding of blood there is no remission of sins.
- Fail to believe in it you won't go to heaven.
- Jonah felt Nineveh deserved what they were going to get.
- Psalm 139:7-10 Cannot run from God - His hand is always there. vs. 11-12
- Jonah from Gath Hepher, God had a heart for the people of Nineveh - He called Jonah to preach there. Jonah ran away from God to Joppa, found a boat to Tarshish. Thought he'd be released from preaching the message of repentance.
- Jonah was an unwilling participant in God's plan.

Hope you had a wonderful Sunday and were able to take in a service and worship the Lord in fellowship with like minded believers.

Blessings,
Liisa

Money Saving Idea

I have saved alot of money by buying whole chickens, roasts, hams, turkeys etc. cooking them and slicing them for lunch meat. When you buy chicken in the deli precooked and sliced it can cost 7-9 dollars a pound when you buy a whole chicken it is so much cheaper per pound. For example this week in the flyer you can buy a whole chicken for $5.99 each.

After the holidays I bought a turkey for $.97 a pound it was a 20 lb. turkey. Deli turkey costs $7-$9 a pound. To have the same amount of meat would have cost at least $140...wow....$20 or $140 just to cook and slice it myself.

After I slice it I put it in freezer bags in small portions which I can take out as I need to. Really easy...better to pay myself than the grocery store!

Happy Friday!
Blessings,
Liisa

Hell

We were talking baout hell at the study yesterday. Here is an article about it that may help explain exactly what hell is.

I looked for books about hell but there are just so many it may be best to ask at the Christian book store for one they reccomend especially to explain it to an unbeliever.

Here is a link to questions and answers about life after death. I did not read all these but I have used this site before for other things and agreed with them.

As we have been learning this past couple of weeks it is very important to verify the things you hear and read by making sure they line up with what the Bible says.

Happy Thursday!
Blessings,
Liisa

Bible Study

This week we looked at Matthew 7. Here is the link for the commentary.

Here are the questions....

1) Have you ever judged someone and then found out you were wrong? (God is the only one who knows someone's heart. We have a limited view.

2) Have you ever been wrongfully judged? How did you feel?

3) Have you ever judged someone for something you do too?

4) Have you ever judged someone and then later found yourself doing the same thing?

5) Do you judge people you dislike or who rub you the wrong way harsher than those you like? Why?

6) Are you aware of any planks in your eye?

7) How do you feel and respond when someone tries to help you get the speck out of your eye?

8) How should we respond?

9) Have you ever prayed for something and then later been happy you didn't get it?

10) Why do you suppose so many are led astray by false prophets? (Don't know the truth about what the Bible says, They are charming, They like them, Don't look into their fruit.....)

11) Have you ever examined the fruit your life bears? what kind is it?

12) We tend to act one way but our true foundation is revealed int he storm. Do you react differently when things get tough?

Have a wonderful day!
Blessings,
Liisa

The Arms that Hold the Universe

You have to watch this... what a wonderful song.

Sermon Notes

This week we had a guest speaker Serge Lemee the WOL Francophone Ministries Projest Coordinator. It was wonderful to hear what the Lord is doing around the world in french speaking countries - Awesome!

He spoke on encouragement from 2 Cor. 4.
- 2 Cor. 4:1-6 Light out of darkness.
- 2 Cor.4:1-8 Paul was discouraged. Discouragement can come to us.
- Like the sun which is too much for us to directly at but it shines through stained glass and is so beautiful, it is like that when God shines through us and others get it and are blessed.
- God is the light in the darkness. Sometimes stained glass is dirty or broken but God can still use it. We can still be a blessing to others.
- God permits discouragement. Spurgeon says his discouragement was so deep that he hoped no one would experience that depth.
- How can such a great preacher be discouraged?
- 2 Cor. 4:7-12 We are the earthen vessel. When we are discouraged we need to realize we are not the treasure we are the vessel that holds the treasure.
- We are like a cup from Tim Hortons, God is the hands that hold the cup. When we hold the cup we toss it out. It is not worth anything it is the treasure inside that makes it valuable.
- 4:13-18 Discouraged - we need to remember the light comes out of darkness. Jesus in our life is treasure not us. We need to look to that - not ourselves.
- We are encouraged by what God can do. We need to keep talking about God and what he does. Sharing the great news is the greatest encouragement.
- When God allows bad it is always for our good.
- To grow it hurts, but what great results.
- Prayer is the key. South Korean Christians go to church every morning to pray before work. 50 years ago zero Christian in South Korea today 40% of the country is Christian! They have the largest church in the world.
- Something is impossible? Yes it is! God can do it!

Have a wonderful day!
Blessings,
Liisa

New Format

Just wanted to let you guys know that instead of the format I was using where each day has a theme I have decided that it will be easier (and more interesting *wink*) if I just post whatever and whenever. Also I will still be doing Flyer Fridays. ~smile~

Happy Wednesday!
